Geboren in een artistieke familie, heeft kunst altijd deel uitgemaakt van An haar DNA. Als graficus weet ze haar werken secuur op te bouwen. Haar getekende structuren worden verborgen in een sluier van dunne gesso-coating, zodat het lijkt alsof je door een suggestieve, dikke mist staart. De compositie die ze wil behouden filtert ze uit en versterkt ze met een extra laag houtskool om ze naar de voorgrond te brengen. Uiteindelijk beginnen de lagen te communiceren en vormen ze het eindpunt van haar tekening. De efemere structuren lijken te zweven op zoek naar een reden van bestaan.

 

An laat zich inspireren door de ‘architectuur’ van de natuur die ze terugvindt in bijenkorven, cocons, insectenvleugels of het prachtige skelet van berenklauw. Maar ze voelt zich ook aangetrokken tot door de mens gemaakte silhouetten zoals kooien, metalen bruggen, visfuiken of korsetten... Ze gebruikt het korset of de kooi om haar eigen gevoelens van gevangenschap in een astmatisch lichaam met chronische rugpijn uit te drukken. Ze symboliseren haar problemen met ademhalen en vrij bewegen.

Born in an artistic family, art has always been a part of An's  DNA. Trained as a master in printmaking, she knows precisely how to construct her images. She builds up her drawings in several layers of charcoal and gesso to give them a certain depth. Hiding her structures in a veil of thin gesso coating so it appears like you're gazing through an evocative, thick mist. Filtering out the composition she wants to retain and enhancing them with an extra layer of charcoal to bring them to the foreground. In the end the layers start to communicate and complete the end state of her drawings. The ephemeral structures seem to float in search of a reason to exist.

 

An is inspired by the 'architecture' of nature that she finds in beehives, cocoons, insect wings or the beautiful skeleton of hogweed. But she's also drawn to manmade silhouettes like cages, metal bridges, fish traps or corsets ... She uses the corset or cage to express her own feelings of entrapment in an asthmatic body with chronic back pains. They symbolise her difficulty of breathing and moving freely.
